Pioneer of independent animation since the 1970s, the American artist Suzan Pitt deploys a hallucinatory and psychedelic universe in her paintings, films and opera sets.

Made from animated paintings by hand, her films navigate between onirism and realism, expressing the desires, the sufferings, the revolts and the transformations of the psyche. They explore sometimes a perpetual devouring sexual reverie ("Asparagus", 1979), the fantasized escape of an isolated and depressed woman ("Joy Street", 1995) or the relationship with the mystical and delirious world of a Mexican doctor to the edge of death ("El Doctor", 2006).
The work of Suzan Pitt (whose last filmographic retrospective took place at the MoMA in 2017) is hailed as one of the most inventive experimental animation films of the last fifty years.
